We live in a consumer society. And we’ve learned our role very well. We consume whatever we feel like having, whether it contains lots of fat, sugar, chemicals or it is genetically modified. And then, when we get sick, we want the doctor to give us a pill that will fix everything. But things don’t work like that.

There is no magic pill, but there is a lifestyle change that reverses serious chronic disease. It’s cheap. It’s safe. It’s effective. Is the solution too simple for us to see it?

You are what you eat. Food does matter!

And what you eat is your choice. You don’t have to be sick.

kid watching tvAccording to a study published in this month’s issue of Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, children who spend a lot of time watching television have higher blood pressure than those who watch less, even if the children are thin and get enough exercise. Associations between television viewing and obesity have already been found by previous studies, but the new report suggests a more direct relationship between extensive TV watching and increases in blood pressure.

The study performed by researchers at Michigan State University consisted of following a group of 111 children, ages 3 to 8, for about four years. The children wore accelerometers (devices that record physical motion) for a week in order to determine the amount of time that they were sedentary. The researchers also gathered information on how many hours the children spent watching TV, playing video games and using the computer. The children’s body fat was also measured.

The researchers found that children who watched television from 1.5 to 5.5 hours a day had significantly higher blood pressure than whose who watched TV less than half an hour a day. Data from the accelerometers showed that the increased blood pressure wasn’t associated with the sedentary behavior overall, but specifically linked to increased TV viewing.

Extensive TV viewing may have harmful physiological effects because:

  • children often snack while watching TV;
  • the programs are distressing to them;
  • watching TV late at night may cut into sleep time or disrupt sleep;
  • it’s also possible that watching television reduces the body’s metabolic rate more than other sedentary activities, says Joey Eisenmann, an assistant professor of kinesiology at Michigan Stat University and the paper’s senior author.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that children watch no more than two hours of high quality television each day.

chia seedsMost people (except for you, which makes you a rare person :) haven’t heard of chia seeds, but I am sure they will become well known in the next few years because of their wonderful nutritional qualities and powerful effects on health improvement. The chia seed is an excellent source of fiber, packed with antioxidants, full of protein, loaded with vitamins and minerals, and the richest known plant source of omega-3.

These seeds are not a modern invention of the latest date, even if we may say they have been re-discovered in the past few years. Their use as a superfood and medicine can be traced back as far as the Aztec and Mayan civilizations. Warriors used it as a high energy endurance food, but also as a medicine. Indians would pack the wounds with chia seeds to avoid infections and promote healing. It is said that one tablespoon of these seeds could sustain a person for 24 hours. Indians running from the Colorado River to the California coast to trade turquoise for seashells would only take the Chia seed for their nourishment.

Chia seeds come from the desert plant Salvia hispanica, a member of the mint family that grows in southern Mexico. This seed is the richest natural source of pure omega-3, the only unprocessed whole food source of omega-3. Omega-3 is nutritionally essential for the human body and has multiple health benefits –it stimulates blood circulation helping people with circulatory problems, such as varicose veins, it reduces the risk of heart attack, it is beneficial for people suffering from rheumatoid arthritis and cardiac arrhythmias, it is helpful in cases of depression and anxiety, it also has anti-cancer effects, prevents cardiovascular disease, improves poor developmental health and the behavior of children with learning problems, helps prevent Parkinson, and the list of benefits could go on. Unfortunately the human body cannot synthesize omega-3 de novo, that is why it is very important for us to consume food that contains omega-3 or take supplements.

Chi seeds are also very rich in fiber content (more than 35%), which gives them the remarkable ability to absorb ten times their weight in water, making them an excellent source of hydratation. If you leave chia seeds in a glass of water and return after about half an hour you will have the surprise to find no seeds in the water, but an almost solid gelatin. This gel-forming reaction is due to the soluble fiber in the chia. Probably the same gel-forming phenomenon takes place in the stomach when these gummy fibers get there. The gel that is formed in the stomach creates a physical barrier between carbohydrates and the digestive enzymes that break them down, slowing the conversion of carbohydrates into sugar. This is what offers the ability for creating endurance, as well as obvious benefits for diabetics. This retention of moisture produced by chia seeds also regulates more efficiently the body’s absorption of nutrients and body fluids.

Chia seeds are also rich in calcium, potassium, magnesium, iron, zinc, many minerals and protein. Chia is digested and absorbed very easily, which makes it very effective when rapid development of tissue takes place. That is why it is recommended during growth periods for children and teenagers, but also during pregnancy and lactation, as well as for athletes, weight lifters, etc.

I hope you find this information interesting and useful. Stay healthy and take care!

We all know how harmful smoke and second-hand smoke is to health. But I have never heard of third-hand smoke before today. I was just listening to NPR radio, Talk of the Nation, and heard this interview with Jonathan Winickoff about his study on third-hand smoke. The interview was not long but it drew my attention. I wanted to find out more, so I looked it up on the internet. I googled “third-hand smoke” and was quite surprised to find it on BBC News, The New York Times, Scientific American, and hundreds and hundreds of sites about health, parenting or science. It was then that I started to realize this is an important issue and, looking more deeply into it, I learnt new things everybody should be aware of.

What is third-hand smoke?

If you don’t smoke, but stay even for a short while around a person who does, hours later people will be able to smell the smoke in your hair and clothes. Well, it is scientifically proven now that it is not only the smoke smell that clings to you. A layer of toxic substances covers all the surfaces smoke has got to –clothes, hair, skin, walls, furniture, carpet… all the space is contaminated. And it is worse with cars because the space is smaller!

Dr. Philip Landrigan, a pediatrician who heads the Children’s Environmental Health Center at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York, said the phrase third-hand smoke is a brand-new term that has implications for behavior. “The central message here is that simply closing the kitchen door to take a smoke is not protecting the kids from the effects of that smoke,” he said. “There are carcinogens in this third-hand smoke, and they are a cancer risk for anybody of any age who comes into contact with them.”

What harmful substances are there in third-hand smoke?

The hazard symbol for toxic/highly toxic subst...

Image via Wikipedia

The 2006 Surgeon General’s Report says there is no risk-free level of tobacco exposure. There are 250 poisonous toxins found in cigarette smoke. One such substance is lead. Very good studies show that tiny levels of exposure are associated with diminished IQ.

Among the substances in third-hand smoke are hydrogen cyanide, used in chemical weapons; butane, which is used in lighter fluid; toluene, found in paint thinners; arsenic, that is a poison used to kill rats; lead; carbon monoxide; and even polonium-210, the highly radioactive carcinogen that was used to murder former Russian spy Alexander V. Litvinenko in 2006. Eleven of the compounds are highly carcinogenic.

Why are children most affected by these toxic substances?baby

Children and pregnant women are most endangered by third-hand smoke because the developing brain is uniquely susceptible to extremely low levels of toxins. Children ingest twice the amount of dust that grown-ups do just because their respiration is faster and they are closer to dusty surfaces, such as floor, for example. Children also tend to touch or even to put their mouth to contaminated surfaces.

Studies in rats suggest that tobacco toxin exposure is the leading cause of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).

There is very clear scientific evidence children are affected by the exposure to third-hand smoke. Toxic substances were detected in bodily fluids of children who have been exposed to third-hand smoke. “There are markers of the tobacco toxins in their blood and urine”, says Dr. Jonathan P. Winickoff, the lead author of the study and an assistant professor of pediatrics at Harvard Medical School.

Here is a brief powerful video that shows very clearly all that I have been talking about:

Conclusion

What else can I say? After reading the information everyone can draw a conclusion. As clear as it may be for some, it is amazing how much controversy it has given place to. What is your opinion about all this?

Resveratrol, a compound naturally found in red wine and grape skins, have been hogging health pages of late. A report released on July 03, 2008 from the U.S. National Institutes of Health has revealed that the compound slowed down age-related decline in obese and middle-aged mice.

This newly-released study, released on Cell Metabolism, was a follow up to an earlier 2006 study that saw a calorie-restricting effect (among other benefits) of the compound resveratrol. The most recent study released has reproduced the findings of earlier studies as resveratrol slowed the uptake of calories and protected the cardiovascular systems of study subjects. This has confirmed resveratrol’s potency in prevention of age-associated disease in mammals.

The study was a collaboration of scientists of Laboratory of Experimental Gerontology at the National Institute of Aging (NIA), Glenn Laboratories for Molecular Biology of Aging at Harvard Medical School, and other international research teams.

The major findings of this newly-released study:

· Total cholesterol was found to be lower after 10 months of resveratrol supplementation.

· The aortas (largest arteries) of the treated group were healthier as compared to the untreated group.

· Resveratrol was also found to moderate inflammation in the study

The newly-released study has implications for the use of resveratrol as a treatment or supplement against the age-related decline in humans such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes and obesity.

I came across this article about eating breakfast to aid in weight loss. I used to skip breakfast due to time constraints and aside from the fact that I am too sleepy while preparing it; nearly burning my hands while preparing corned beef hash browns.

As a “plus-sized person”, I really want to lose weight safely. There are enough ‘horror stories’ concerning surgery gone awry and some supplements being downright unsafe (do you recall some ‘metabolism boosters’ containing regulated ingredients like ma huang; found to cause or contribute dangerous cardiac and liver side effects) that I have come across in my favorite health and fitness magazines.

I am glad to report though that after two months of starting a “lifestyle” program, which uses food portion control and regular brisk walking, I lost around two inches on my waist and 14 pounds on the scale. I am still halfway in my battle against the bulge, and I need to lose around 10 more pounds to have a ‘healthy’ target weight of 150 lbs. (for my height of 5′5”). The program I am on, by the way, was prescribed to me by a college friend who is now a licensed internist in the medical field.

Yes, I still do have cravings for ‘fatty food’ like chocolate chip ice cream (yummy!) and barbecued baby back ribs (the aroma is divine!) but being mindful of food portion control really works. I get to eat my favorite foods, and never feel ‘deprived’. I always keep in my mind that whatever I would do or eat (however small) would definitely be seen and felt on my waist in the long run.

Let me share what worked for me so far (aside from eating breakfast):

1. Really, get moving. Do housework like cleaning windows and laundry.

2. Don’t drive your car or any other vehicle for short distances (less than 300 meters for me), instead, if time permits; walk around the mall. Start a brisk walking program (30 minutes a day or as prescribed by your health care provider).

3. Read and be informed about the latest health new

4. Skip the extra gravy for your favorite grilled meat; grill lower fat cuts of meat too

5. Eat fruits and vegetables more often than not; learn to cook them the ‘healthy’ way.

6. Be mindful of your portions; of any food or ’sugary’ beverages (this really worked for me).

7. Read the labels and ingredient declarations before buying processed food; these are printed for a reason.

8. If you are feeling ‘blue’, talk to your friends on the phone or through IM and SMS. This keeps my hands from reaching for the ‘fattening’ snacks; drink plain or bottled water often (article coming on this).

9. Yes, men do lose weight faster than women due to our muscle proportion and distribution. But for the ladies, don’t be daunted by this; you can do it!

That’s it and I have practiced these tips as good habits for the past two months now. The only downside: I have to buy me some new belts…my jeans and trousers are getting loose!

I researched a product that I am going to post an article about, it is CLA, or conjugated linoleic acid (phew, long word to remember, glad they abreaviated it). Coupled with some excersize this is a natural way to lose fat without the side-effects. Here is a link to one of the sites I found to check it out, they have quality stuff.

I wanted to get the info on why I keep seeing articles on drinking Red Wine, and why it’s supposed to be so healthy for you. From what I’ve seen, there are people who abuse drinking, as a whole, and they have given alcohol a bad name. Moving forward from there, we find evidence that strongly backs using wine, in moderation, for health benefits.

One of the things they have found is a compound that is naturally found on the skin of grapes, peanuts and cranberries. This is called Resveratrol, and Researchers have done extensive studies on Resveratrol (Harvard U) and have had very strong results. They are still dealing with mice (a common research practice due to the similarity our body systems and the physical systems of mice) but they have come up with some great results.

When they did the studies on lab mice, they found:

1. It helped to strengthen endurance in mice.

2. Helped to curtail weight gain

3. Actually reduced the growth of melanoma skin cancer.

4. Helped to improve both cardiac and lung function.

5. It also reduced the damage that occurs after having a stroke

6. Aided in reducing cholesterol.

Downsides:

The studies were done on lab mice, but that is a very dependable way of studying the effects of many different human-related drugs and other cures. In order for humans to have the same levels that brought on the improvements, they would have to drink 300 glasses of wine a day (compared to a lab rat) but we have our ways of extracting resources like Resveratrol, and that being said, they are pouring literal millions of dollars in research (one company over $82 million) to further study Resveratrol.

So, the downsides being weighed, it will be very interesting to see them come up with a consentrated pill or some other form of taking the necessary dosage – this has a lot of promise.

I have personally used this method. Please remember that each persons body is different, so ask a doctor if you feel you need to.

I was working out too hard. I couldn’t really feel it during the day, but at night my body would ache and I couldn’t sleep. I found that taking a product, called “A-B Calm“, which is essentially calcium and Magnisium, they recommend 362mg Calcium, and 70mg of Magnesium. The Calcium helps your system absorb the Magnesium. Special note: We have had many people purchasing this product with great results, I am using this combination

This also helps with people who have cramps or figity legs before you go to sleep. This helped me very quickly to be able to sleep and in my endurance for workouts. I found better results when I used it later at night.

Here are some interesting links to check out from other writers that have researched and used Magnesium:
